There’s an interesting and thought provoking video available on Youtube called “Did You Know”. The video provides a unique perspective on how the world’s population, the amount of data, and educational technology are rapidly changing. One of the greatest challenges for educators is to keep pace with changes in technology.
After viewing this video, I feel that educators have to be aware of constantly changing data and information. Educators have to review the information that they are providing to students in the classroom and consider whether the information will change in the near future. As demonstrated in the video, educators can tell students what will be the anticipated level of change in 2 years, 5 years, or some other timeframe that has a significant value to students and the material being presented.
Another implication from the video is that rapid changes in technology can influence how learning occurs in schools. For example, a recent study of nursing programs indicates that there is a shift away from traditional classroom lectures towards more hands-on and student-centric learning using simulations and virtual reality technology. In every educational field, administrators and teachers must anticipate changes in technology and maintain pace in order to avoid wasting valuable resources and allowing their technology to become outdated.

Hi Fred,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your educational writing. I love how you referenced the articles at the end. That is definitely something I can learn from you this semester. My mom was a nursing professor for quite some time. I remember her teaching pharmacology and gerontology, along with coordinating and teaching clinicals. She used powerpoint mostly for lectures, and every so often had a simulation lab. At that time though, they had manikins with a heart monitor. I bet the simulations that can take place now with new technology is astounding! I do hope that my future nurses were taught by the most up-to-date and most realistic technology, as I believe that bodes well for my future. So you make a really great point! Anticipation of change in technology is very important to our health.

Hi Colleen. Thanks for your response. I read your blog and I agree with your comment about committing the resources necessary to help educators learn and use the latest educational technology. I work with the military as an Instructional Systems Designer and I am helping to update a medical training curriculum that relies heavily on Powerpoint presentations for lectures. My goal is to provide examples of how to incorporate media and use other strategies to make the lectures more engaging for the students. I look forward to reading more of your posts! Fred
